For today’s post, I’d like to highlight some games from my steam library that I own but have never finished, but intend to in 2024. Consider this a new years resolution of sorts!

1: Hollow Knight

As a huge fan of Undertale, you’re probably surprised that I haven’t beaten Hollow Knight. The games seem to go together whenever great indie story-driven games are discussed. But that’s just why I’ve never beaten Hollow Knight. It’s something of a white whale, to me. My friends all love it–I’ve asked them not to spoil me, although I’ve seen enough excitement about the characters to know I’ll love them. I know I can only experience it for the first time once. Once I play it, I will never experience it the same way again. Still, with Silksong on the way (hah!), perhaps now is the time.

2: Portal and Portal 2

“Portal?” I hear you say, dear reader. “You haven’t played Portal?!” Well, yet again, it’s a situation where I can only play it for the first time once. But here, there’s another issue. First person games are an accessibility nightmare for me. I’ve been stubborn so far and chosen not to just watch a playthrough in order to preserve my first time playing it. But I intend for 2024 to be the year I play the classics I’ve avoided, while I’m out of work and improving myself as a creative, so I’ll find a way. Perhaps a TV and controller will make it work for me, or maybe I’ll dip my toes into VR. I’ll consider learning to tackle my own accessibility issues an important lesson in creating accessible games.

3: Potionomics

If you’ve never heard of Potionomics, let me tell you: I. Love. This. Game. “Why,” you ask, “haven’t you bothered finishing it yet? This isn’t even one of those play-it-once games!” Well, this game eats up my day like nothing else. I got it while I was still in college, and I had to put it aside because I would pick it up on a break from homework in the early afternoon and come to with thirty seconds left until dinner ended and no work done at all. Now that I don’t have any homework due, I think it’s time to come back to an old friend.

There’s lots of games I’m looking forward to in 2024, including a sequel to my favorite roguelike ever, Card Survival Tropical Island, so I’m choosing to keep this list at three. I’ll keep you updated, dear reader, on my journey with these great games, and I’ll see you tomorrow on Tabletop Thursday. Edit 1/4: I thought today was Saturday; it’s Thursday. See you all soon for Tabletop Thursday!
